Wrote the novels 'Voyage in the Dark' (1934), 'Good Morning, Midnight' (1939) and 'Wide Sargasso Sea' (1966)
Wrote the short story collections 'The Left Bank and Other Stories' (1927), 'Tigers Are Better Looking' (1968) and 'Sleep It Off, Lady' (1976)

Why she might be annoying:

She was a bipolar, self-destructive alcoholic.
She called herself 'a doormat in a world of boots.'
After an unsuccessful year as a chorus girl, she briefly worked as a prostitute (1910).
After 'Good Morning Midnight,' she dropped out of sight so thoroughly, she was widely thought to have died.
She was arrested for assaulting her neighbors and a police officer (1949).

Why she might not be annoying:

During World War I, she volunteered at a soldier's canteen.
Her son William died when three weeks old (1920).
She was rediscovered when BBC radio staged an adaptation of 'Good Morning Midnight' (1958).
Her best-known novel, 'Wide Sargasso Sea,' was a prequel to Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre,' telling the story of the first Mrs. Rochester.
She drew on her West Indian heritage and struggles with mental illness in writing 'Wide Sargasso Sea.'
