Why he might be annoying:

He appointed relatives to key government posts.
Nationalists worried that his dependence on India for financial and military aid threatened to make the country a satellite state.
He declared the country a secular state, but gave in to Islamic demands to ban alcohol and gambling.
His government's mishandling of food distribution aggravated a famine in which 1.5 million people died (1974).
In response to political unrest, he announced a state of emergency, banned opposition parties and declared himself president for life (1975).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a charismatic speaker.
He was repeatedly jailed by Pakistan for his advocacy of Bengali rights.
After civilian rule was restored in Bangladesh, his daughter Hasina was elected prime minister (1996).
In a poll conducted by the BBC's Bengali language service, he was named the 'Greatest Bengali of All Time.' (2004)
