Voice Actor

The Resume

    (August 20, 1907-June 14, 1977)
Born in New York City, New York
Birth name was Herbert Theodore Bergman
Best known as the voice of Fred Flintstone in The Flintstones
Was also the voice of Boris the Russian wolfhound in ‘Lady and the Tramp’ (1955)
Appeared in the films ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’ (1946), ‘Viva Zapata!’ (1952), ‘I, the Jury’ (1953), ‘The Desperate Hours’ (1955), ‘The Tarnished Angels’ (1957) and ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961)
Radio roles include the title role in ‘Joe Palooka.’ Solomon Levy in ‘Abie’s Irish Rose,’ Pasquale in ‘Life with Luigi’ and Falstaff Openshaw in ‘The Fred Allen Show’

Why he might be annoying:

For several years he was billed as either Teddy Bergman (for serious roles) or Alan Reed (for comedic parts).
With his stocky build, he looked quite a bit like Fred Flintstone.
He was a heavy smoker, which contributed to the emphysema and heart disease that killed him.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He could voice 22 dialects.
He coined Fred Flintstone’s catchphrase ‘Yabba-dabba-doo!’ (The script originally had ‘Yahoo,’ but Reed felt the word lacked the exuberance the scene needed.)
He had great chemistry with the other ‘Flintstones’ voice actors (Jean Vander Pyl, Mel Blanc and Bea Benaderet).
He donated his body to medical science.
