Born in Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia
Son of 'Mutiny on the Bounty' co-author James Norman Hall
Won Oscars for Best Cinematography for 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (1969), 'American Beauty' (1999) and 'The Road to Perdition' (2002)
Was also cinematographer for the films 'Incubus' (1965), 'Cool Hand Luke' (1967), 'In Cold Blood' (1967), 'Marathon Man' (1976), 'Black Widow' (1987) and 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' (1993)
Appeared in the documentary 'Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography' (1992)

Why he might be annoying:

He initially planned to be a writer until he flunked out of journalism class.
He admitted that his first Oscar nomination, for 'Morturi,' was the accidental result of using the wrong filter while filming a day-for-night scene.
He went on an 11-year hiatus from cinematography to try his hand at directing (1976-87), but only got to direct TV commercials.
He almost refused to work on 'The Road to Perdition' because of his concerns about the film's violence.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named after novelist Joseph Conrad.
He was the cameraman for several classic episodes of 'The Outer Limits.'
Producer Richard Zanuck said, 'Every film he worked on was something beautiful to the eye, and very imaginative.'
His final Oscar, won posthumously, was accepted by his son, Conrad W. Hall, who is also a cinematographer.
