    In the medieval epic 'The War Lord' (1965), his voice was dubbed by Paul Frees
    He was married three times, divorced twice.
    He said about his 6'5 height, 'It's held me back more often than it's helped me. I can play more than just physical parts.'

    He served in a US Army field artillery unit during World War II.
    He won two Emmys as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for 'Hill Street Blues.' (1981-82)
    Fellow Hill Street Blues actor Rene Enriquez noted, 'He came to work up to the last minute. He thought he was going to conquer it [cancer].'
    The show's writers honored his request to have his character's absence explained by having Esterhaus die while having sex (offscreen, of course).
