Why he might be annoying:

    He was present at James Garfield's assassination (1881).
    He was charged with corruption for granting congressional favors to railroad companies.
    He ran for president against Grover Cleveland, and lost (1884).
    During the election, he was falsely accused of being biased against Roman Catholics.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He opposed slavery.
    He was an excellent orator.
    He strongly supported the separation of church and state.
    He taught disabled students at the Pennsylvania Institute for the Blind (1852-1854).
    He helped propose the 14th Amendment, which gave blacks equal protection under the laws.
