Politician

The Resume

    (September 6, 1893-March 22, 1986)
    Born in Mount Sterling, Ohio
    Middle name was William
United States Senator from Ohio (January 3, 1947–January 3, 1959)
    Governor of Ohio (January 9, 1939–January 8, 1945)
    Attorney General of Ohio (January 9, 1933–January 11, 1937)
Republican nominee for Vice President in 1944

Why he might be annoying:

As Thomas Dewey's running mate on the Republican ticket, he campaigned against the New Deal and President Franklin D. Roosevelt's judicial nominees.
He tried to crack the then-Democrat stronghold of Texas, where on the campaign trail he called Roosevelt 'a front for the Hillman-Browder Communist Party.'
They lost but Thomas Dewey ran again in 1948 - just without him as the running mate (Dewey instead chose California Governor Earl Warren this time).
He introduced the Bricker Amendment, an attempt to amend the Constitution and the power of the president in foreign affairs (it failed to pass the Senate by a single vote).
He was narrowly defeated for reelection by Stephen M. Young in 1958.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the United States Army during World War I.
In college, he split his time between the debating team and the varsity baseball team.
He became the first Republican to serve three consecutive terms as governor.
He began a legal practice in Columbus, Ohio, which is still one of the top ten largest firms in the state.
When he was boarding an underground Capitol subway, a Capitol police officer, William Louis Kaiser, fired shots at him. The two shots, fired as close range, narrowly missed (July 12, 1947).
He was a conservative Republican, but voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 (which his opponent held against him during his reelection bid).
He had the last laugh after being snubbed by Dewey, who not only lost but also failed to win either Bricker's home state of Ohio or Warren's home state of California.
