The Resume

    (November 9, 1982-June 19, 1984)
    Aired on BBC2 and MTV
    Adrian Edmondson as Vyvyan Basterd
    Rik Mayall as Rick
    Nigel Planer as Neil Pye
Christopher Ryan as Mike the Cool Person
Alexei Sayle as the Balowski Family/Various roles
Premise: The surreal adventures of four college roommates in Margaret Thatcher's Britain, with a musical guest
Theme song was 'The Young Ones' by Cliff Richard

Why Young Ones might be annoying:

Only a dozen episodes were made.
The episodes had basic titles like 'Oil,' 'Bomb,' 'Boring,' 'Interesting' and 'Sick.'
Although the main characters were college students, they never studied or attended class.
BBC TV executives almost didn't air the show because the main characters were not likable.
Vyvyan was a violent punk, Rick was an obnoxious anarchist poet and die-hard Cliff Richard fan, Neil was an idiotic vegetarian hippie, and Mike was a slacker who bribed and blackmailed his professors.
The characters all had poor hygiene and rarely bathed.
They constantly bickered, destroying their house and furniture in the process.
It was implied that they were virgins.
Alexei Sayle portrayed all the members of a Polish family in a thick British accent.
The musical guests were usually awful '80s bands.

Why Young Ones might not be annoying:

The style of humor contained elements of surrealism, slapstick, comedic monologues, crude jokes, talking puppets, inanimate objects, and bizarre characters and locations (including a visit to Narnia).
It satirized stereotypical college students, the nuclear family and the Thatcher-era.
It has a popular cult following with British and American audiences.
The main characters were creations of the actors who performed at comedy clubs in London.
Many British comedians, such as Terry Jones, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Jennifer Saunders, Robbie Coltrane, Ben Elton, and Stephen Frost, appeared on the show.
By including a performance of a live band, it was classified as 'Light Entertainment' instead of 'Situation Comedy' and hence given a bigger budget.
A few good bands like Motörhead, Madness and Dexy's Midnight Runners appeared on the show.
Nigel Planer recorded a song as his Neil character that went to #2 on the UK charts.
The writers purposely ended the show while it was still popular.
