Location

The Resume

Located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Settled by Norse explorers via Greenland circa 1000 AD
Discovered by Helge Ingstad (1960) and excavated by Anne Stine Ingstad (1961-68)
Further excavations by Parks Canada (1973-1976)
    UNESCO World Heritage Site (1978)

Why L'Anse aux Meadows might be annoying:

Its name is an Anglophone bastardization of ‘L’Anse aux Meduses’ (Jellyfish Cove).
It was abandoned after only 60 years for unknown reasons.
It is sometimes wrongly identified as the mysterious 'Vinland' of the Norse sagas.
It is overshadowed by the much later ‘discoveries’ of Christopher Columbus.
It may have been a camp for Norse explorers traveling further south rather than a true settlement.

Why L'Anse aux Meadows might not be annoying:

It is the site of the first European settlement in North America.
It was also the location of several native settlements.
Its inhabitants were the first North Americans to smelt iron.
It was carefully reburied after each excavation to perserve the archaeological remains.
It was visited by a model Viking ship, the Gaia, sailing from Norway to Washington D.C. (1991).
