Why he might be annoying:

He introduced the Klingon language in his novel, The Final Reflection.
None of his work has ever been filmed.
His girlfriend who he was living with when he died was bisexual and dated other men and women while they lived together.
    His middle name was Milo.

Why he might not be annoying:

He usually had to hold down a fulltime job outside of writing including; hospital orderly, computer consultant and copy editor.
He was best friends with fellow scifi writer Robert Jordan who called him the best writer in America.
He suffered from diabetes and renal failure that required dialysis for much of his adult life.
He deliberately wrote in different styles because he didn't want to repeat what others or even what he had done before.
He was much admired and liked by other writers.
He made a great (although controversial) contribution to the Star Trek universe by showing the Federation as less than perfect and (pre-The Next Generation) showing Klingons in a positive light.
He died tragically young from the accumulation of his health problems.
