He was often credited as producing his films, though he never actually did.

He lived the American dream, immigrating from a poor English mining town to make a fortune in Hollywood.
He spent time in a German prison camp during World War I.
His impact on the horror genre is still felt today.
He is generally considered a superior director to Tod Browning, the other major horror director of the 1930s.
He was one of the first openly gay Hollywood celebrities and was ostracized for it.
