Why he might be annoying:

Despite all his years of service to baseball as an umpire, he will be remembered for a blown call which robbed Detroit Tiger Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.
He deprived a pitcher of the second perfect game in baseball in less than a week and the third in less than a month.
Almost instantly, many Facebook pages against him popped up, while his family received threats.
The blown call created debate over whether or not instant replay should be used in baseball in situations like this.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, while acknowledging the blown call, would not overturn it.
One of his listed hobbies is Christmas lighting.

Why he might not be annoying:

After the game, he promptly made this statement concerning the blown call: 'I just cost the kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw until I saw the replay. It was the biggest call of my career.'
Both Gallaraga and Tigers manager Jim Leyland quickly sympathized with him.
The day after, he shook hands with Galarraga as he gave him the Tigers lineup card while looking visibly distraught.
He showed that everyone is human and makes mistakes.
He has a BS in education from Bowling Green University.
His MLB.com biography says he has been told that he might be related to James Joyce.
