He resigned his teaching post at West Point after only a few days to join the Confederate forces.
He fired the first shots of the Civil War against Union forces at Fort Sumter.
During the Battle of Shiloh he called off an attack early, leading to his defeat by General Grant.
He was known by his initials.

During the Mexican War, he was praised for his conduct at battles of Contreras, Churubusco and Chapultepec.

He played a big part in establishing New Orlean's rail transit systems.
