The Nobel Prize in Physics

    (1895- )
    Born in Sweden
International award created by Alfred Noble
To be awarded to whoever makes 'the greatest contribution to physics' in the previous year
Famous winners include; Marie and Pierre Curie, Gugielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, and Enrico Fermi
Of the 186 winners of the prize through 2009, all but 14 (all Asian) have been white. No blacks, and only (Curie and Maria Goeppert-Mayer) two women. Having only two women winners is the lowest number of any Nobel Prize category.
In six different years, there have been no awards.
The nominations are held in secret, even the nominees don't know who they are.
There is an average of twenty years (and in one case over 50 years) between the time of the work that earns the prize and when the work is recognized with a nomination/award. Since there are no posthumous prizes, undoubtedly some deserving persons have not been recognized as they should have been.
It, and the prizes for chemistry and medicine, are the least controversial of the Nobel Prizes.
The awards have been given for an interesting mix of practical and theoretical research.
During the Cold War, socialist leaning but decidedly anti-communist, neutral Sweden was able to fairly give awards to both sides of the Iron Curtain.
The winners split a pot of over one million U.S. dollars!
Some of the winners such as Marie Curie and Albert Einstein have become very famous.
It gives science geeks recognition that way out weigh sports trophies.
