    Born in Vienna, Austria
    Full name is Hans Hugo Bruno Selye
    Considered the first person to study biological stress
    Coined the terms ‘eustress’ and ‘distress’ in terms of whether the responses to stress are positive or negative
    Raised in Komárom, <5244>Hungary<5244/>
    Doctor of Medicine and Chemistry in Prague (1929)
    First studied a stress condition called general adaptation syndrome (1936)
    Nominated for the Nobel prize (1949)
    Wrote ‘The Stress of Life’ (1956), ‘From Dream to Discovery: On Being a Scientist’ (1964), ‘Stress Without Distress’ (1974), and ‘The Stress of my Life’ (1977; 2nd ed. 1979)
    Died in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Why he might be annoying:

    He had two middle names.
    He initially thought that stress was a new hormone before realizing that the outcome of each used substance was the same.
    As a result, he became so depressed that he nearly gave up on his research.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was called the ‘Einstein of medicine’ for his extensive research on stress.
    He wanted to provide evidence-based, practice-focused training to health and workplace professionals readily available throughout the world.
    He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. (1968)
    The university he attended at his hometown is named after him.
