Tennis Player

The Resume

    (August 16, 1930-February 3, 2021)
    Born in Cincinnati, Ohio
Birth name was Marion Anthony Trabert
Won two French National Championships (1954-55), two US National Championships (1953,1955), and one Wimbledon (1955)
Won the French Pro Championship twice (1956,1959)
US Davis Cup team captain (1976-80)
Tennis and golf analyst for CBS (1971-2004)

Why he might be annoying:

He said his biggest regret as a player was tanking against John Bromwich in the Australian National Championship (1954).
As Davis Cup captain, he found it hard to handle players like John McEnroe. (‘I couldn’t control him on the court.’)
When anti-apartheid protesters ran onto the court during a Davis Cup match between the US and South Africa, he hit two of the protesters with a racquet (1977).

Why he might not be annoying:

At the University of Cincinnati, he was a starter on the basketball team that won the Mid-American Conference championship and the NCAA men’s singles tennis champion (both 1951).
In 1955, he did not drop a set at either Wimbledon or the US Nationals. (To give some indication of the difficulty of this feat, only three other players –Don Budge, Chuck McKinley, and Bjorn Borg – have won just Wimbledon without losing a set.)
In addition to being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame (1970), he also served as President of the Hall for a decade (2001-11).
