The Resume

    (June 10, 1930-December 23, 2021)
    Born in Newark, New Jersey
Editor in chief of ‘Vogue’ (1971-88)
    Founded ‘Marabella’ magazine (1989)

Why she might be annoying:

She admitted to being increasingly out of step with fashion trends in the 1980s: ‘I couldn’t stand the frills and the glitz and the $40,000 ball gowns.’
Nobody bothered to tell her she had been replaced at Vogue by Anna Wintour; instead, she found out when Liz Smith discussed her firing on an evening news show.
She quit the magazine named after her after five years, noting, ‘They kept changing and changing the personality of the magazine. I felt I had to leave.’
She gave her memoirs the punning title ‘In and Out of Vogue.’ (1995)

Why she might not be annoying:

During her term as editor in chief, Vogue’s circulation tripled to 1.2 million.
She reduced Vogue’s coverage of the jet set and aristocracy, declaring ‘In an age of Gloria Steinems and Barbara Streisands, they were passé.’
She championed American designers Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Donna Karan.
Influenced by her husband, cancer surgeon William Cahan, she campaigned to stop women from smoking.
She said, ‘I liked style… but fashion as in ‘trendy’ never really interested me that much.’
