The Resume

    (March 1, 1961- )
Born in Washington, District of Columbia
American organization of volunteers who carry out humanitarian missions in foreign countries
    Funded by the American government
Volunteers serve 27 month (including training time) terms
Purpose is to help Americans and foreigners understand each other better and to provide material help to needy people
Over 200,000 Americans have served in 139 countries
Sixty percent of volunteers are women, ninety percent are college graduates with an average age of 28
Most volunteers serve in Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia
2010 budget was 400 million dollars

Why The Peace Corps might be annoying:

Its 400 million dollar budget? That's our money!
The idea originated with Hubert Humphrey, who first introduced a bill in Congress to create it in 1957, but President John F. Kennedy gets all the credit for its founding in 1961.
Kennedy appointed his brother-in-law, Sargent Shriver, as its first director.
Many foreigners are suspicious of it, thinking the volunteers are spies for the United States and/or their own governments.
Some of the projects they undertake end in failure because there is no maintenance of projects, such as electrically powered wells after the volunteers leave an area.
There have been several scandals including; local women impregnated by male American volunteers and illegal drug use by volunteers. Bolivia has banned it from their country amid allegations of cocaine manufacturing and trade and verified instances of Bolivian aboriginal women being sterilized against their will/knowledge by volunteers.
Their logo and name are kind of hippie looking/sounding.
The work and living conditions can be brutal and several volunteers over the years have been murdered or died from accidents/disease.

Why The Peace Corps might not be annoying:

One of its mottos is 'The hardest job you will ever love.'
Overall, it has done an incredible and incalculable amount of good in the world.
They have been particularly helpful with AIDS care/treatment, education, and business development.
There could not be a better image for the United States than having young educated people come to an area to help its people.
The financial rewards are almost nonexistent, ensuring that only very giving people volunteer.
Although most of the volunteers are recruited straight out of college, many others including; doctors, nurses, and engineers, gave up very high paying jobs to volunteer.
They try to stay out of the politics of the countries in which they serve.
Employees can only work there for five years, ensuring the flow of fresh ideas. However, time as a volunteer does not count against that limit so a volunteer can do their time and then bring their experience to the agency itself for another five years.
