Boxer

The Resume

    (July 18, 1990- )
    Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
Birth name was Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán
WBA Fedecentro welterweight champion (Apr. 18, 2008)
WBC light middleweight champion (Mar. 5, 2011)
WBA light middleweight champion (Apr. 20, 2013)
WBC middleweight champion (Nov. 21, 2015)
WBO light middleweight champion (Sept. 17, 2016)
Highly-publicized match against Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin ended in a controversial draw (Sept. 16, 2017)
Named WBA and WBC middleweight champ in a rematch against Golovkin by majority decision (Sept. 15, 2018)

Why he might be annoying:

He turned pro at 15, quitting high school to do so.
His 'Canelo' nickname is in reference to his red hair; it being the Spanish word for 'Cinnamon' (guessing the Spanish word for Ginger - 'Jengibre' Alvarez - didn't have the same ring to it).
He enjoys riding horses bareback a la Vladimir Putin.
He made a name for himself taking on Floyd Mayweather, Jr. The fight ended in (his first) loss by decision.
He has been accused of using his pull in Las Vegas to sway the judges in his favor (many insisted he had lost the original fight to Golovkin/'GGG').
'GGG' himself accused him of being a long-term drug cheat who is protected by 'corrupt' boxing officials.
He received a six-month suspension backdated to his first drug test fail following the Golovkin draw, halting calls for a rematch until the ban was lifted.

Why he might not be annoying:

His favorite training song is Michael Jackson's 'Beat It.'
In his first 13 fights as a pro, he knocked out 11 opponents, most of whom were older/larger than himself.
He rebounded quickly after the Mayweather loss - knocking out Alfredo Angulo in the 10th round of his next fight.
He was ranked as the world's best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec (May 2018).
He is known as one of the best combination punchers in boxing (body puncher/counter-puncher).
He became boxing's biggest pay-per-view star with the retirement of Floyd Mayweather.
His 2017 fights against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennady Golovkin both generated more than one million pay-per-view buys.
The fights were the first U.S. boxing matches not involving Mayweather or Pacquiao to register one million buys since the Lewis-Tyson TKO in 2002.
