Why she might be annoying:

She was terribly shy.
She was a hypochondriac, and manufactured many phony 'illnesses.'
She once fell in love with a married man.
She tried to be a governess, but failed because she disliked children.
She was described as 'a little, plain, provincial, sickly-looking old maid' (and this was when she was in her thirties).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was raised in the misty, lonely Yorkshire countryside, and was bored much of the time.
She suffered from 'melancholia' (depression).
Many people in her life told her that literature was not for women, and tried to stop her from writing.
She used a pen name, but William Makepeace Thackeray blew her cover by introducing her in public as 'Jane Eyre.'
She had to watch her brother and both sisters die within a year of each other.
She herself died, pregnant, at thirty-eight.
