    Also wrote 'Three Soldiers' (1921), 'Manhattan Transfer' (1925), 'District of Columbia' (1939-49) and 'The Men Who Made the Nation' (1957)
    He went from being a socialist revolutionary to a backer of Joseph McCarthy.
    Ernest Hemingway called him 'the pilot fish' for bringing his rich friends to Hemingway's favorite hangouts in Paris.
    His non-linear steam-of-consciousness technique can make his novels hard to follow.
    He volunteered as an ambulance driver in World War I.
    An auto accident killed his wife Katherine and cost him the sight in one eye (1947).
    Jean-Paul Sartre called him 'the greatest writer of our time.'
