Why Spokane, Washington might be annoying
Its actual pronunciation emphasizes the second syllable and rhymes with ‘ran’ rather than ‘rain.’
While whites would eventually make up more than 92 percent of the metropolitan area, the first white men – fur trappers – came into the area only in the early 19th century.
Some 32 blocks of the downtown commercial area were destroyed in The Great Fire of August 1889.
In the spring and fall, temperatures can sink to 14 degrees F (-10 C) and soar to 97 degrees (36 C).

It is the birthplace of Fathers’ Day (1910).
Following the Great Fire, where only one person died, Dutch bankers made a significant contribution to its resurrection.
Expo ’74 was the first post-war World’s Fair attended by the Soviet Union.
The Bing Crosby Collection, named for a native of the area, is on display at his alma mater Gonzaga.
At least its motto doesn’t hint at total perfection!
