Why they might be annoying:

Their lyrics and song titles are often overly dramatic and hokey.
The band constantly changed it's lineup.
Former drummer Grim committed suicide (1999).
Their early albums had poor production quality.
They wore the common Norwegian metal motif: tons of white and black makeup, and spiked leather outfits.
None of them ever revealed their birth names.
They broke up.

Why they might not be annoying:

Despite getting their start during the infamous Norwegian metal scene of the early 90s (murders, church burnings, etc), they strayed far from that.
Their musical inspiration is Bathory.
Their albums got progressively better in production (famed metal producer Peter Tägtgren produced their last three albums).
Demonaz suffered severe tendonitis in both arms, which forced him to depart the band (Abbath later switched from bass to guitar).
Their lyrics, while often hokey and somewhat cheesy, were of a grand, epic scale; with the Viking theme that is common among Norwegian metal bands.
