When attending a civil rights picket in Alabama, he and several other protesters were confronted by a gun-wielding white man as they bought sodas at an integrated store.
When the gunman, Tom L. Coleman, pointed the pistol at seventeen-year-old Ruby Sales, Daniels pushed her out of the way, and took the bullet.
He died instantly.
His killer was acquitted by an all-white jury.
