Why they might be annoying
Their name stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan (meaning ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’), but a new explanation was created for English-speaking markets: Beyond the Scene.
The group members all adopted single name monikers (or even shorter ones in the cases of V and RM).
Their fans are known as the BTS Army.
A planned appearance on Japanese TV was cancelled after photos surfaced of Jimin wearing a t-shirt that celebrated the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (2018).
Shortly after that controversy, pictures resurfaced from an old photo shoot showing RM wearing a hat with the SS Death’s Head logo.
Why they might not be annoying
They were the first K-pop act to appear at the American Music Awards and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (2017).
They were the first Korean performers to hit #1 on Billboard’s album chart (2018).
They became the youngest recipients of South Korea’s Order of Cultural Merit (2018).
They are estimated to bring over $3.5 billion to the South Korean economy annually.
They ranked #1 on Forbes’ Korean Power Celebrity list (2018).
