Why he might be annoying:

He backed out of a chance to attend the University of Texas on a football scholarship to pursue a baseball career.
He was a journeyman player, as he played on seven different teams.
He holds the Red Sox and Yankee franchise records for career hit-by-pitches.
He pissed off many Yankee fans by signing a contract with the Red Sox the following season.
During his tenure with the Rockies, he failed to guide the team to consistency as his teams frequently finished below .500, despite having an All-Star lineup which featured Larry Walker, Dante Bichette, Andres Galarraga and Vinny Castilla.
His tenure as Cubs manager was viewed as being disastrous as his teams failed to reach the post-season, despite having Sammy Sosa in the lineup.

He branched out as a star player during his stint with the Angels.
He is the first player in baseball history to make it to the World Series in three consecutive years with three different teams.
He was a member of the World Series champion Twins (1987).
He was the first manager of the Colorado Rockies franchise.
