Four time National League All Star (1938, 1939, 1942, 1943)
Best known for being the only major league pitcher to throw no-hitters in consecutive starts (June 11, 1938 and June 15, 1938)

He had a losing career pitching record.
All throughout his career, he was plagued by wildness and poor control.
He smoked.

Why he might not be annoying:

After struggling in his rookie year, fellow Reds pitcher Bucky Walters told him to study the pitching style of Hall of Famer Lefty Grove. Vander Meer did, and ended up throwing back-to-back no-hitters and starting the All Star team.
In gratitude to Walters, Vander Meer bought Walters a gold watch and his wife a fur coat.
After he threw his first no-hitter, he told reporters 'I really am starting to feel good out there...who knows, maybe I'll go throw another one next time.'
He was left handed.
After throwing his second no-hitter, he said 'I think someone will tie the record one day. But I doubt anyone will ever break it in a million years.'
He always signed autographs for fans.
In his first start after his second no-hitter, he held the Braves hitless until there were 2 outs in the 8th inning. After giving up a single, he called time, went over to the batter who had broken his streak and hugged him, saying 'you have no idea how great it is to have this pressure off.'
