It was constantly raided by foreigners for much of its history.
Its slums butt up against the city's wealthier districts.
The population is the densest in the world.
Traffic and pollution create a nightmare for both residents and tourists.
It is often plagued by mudslides, typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The city was once an ugly symbol to the oppression of Ferdinand Marcos's rule (1966-1986).

Why Manila, Philippines might not be annoying:

It has a warm tropical climate all-year round.
Monuments to heroes Jose Rizal and US General Douglas MacArthur are erected here.
It was the site of the famous 'Thrilla in Manila' boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975.
There are a lot of churches and art museums in and around the city.
Tourists often flock to its pristine beaches to surf or go fishing.
