Despite committing to a scholarship at Northeastern University, he opted out and elected to play in the Western Hockey League.
He never received mainstream exposure early in his career as a result of playing in Columbus.
He spent the final weeks with the Blue Jackets as a healthy scratch.
He was rumoured to frequently have butted heads with John Tortorella, which played a key role in the team's decision to trade him.

His first NHL goal was a game winner (2011).
He is the third player in the history of the Blue Jackets to record a 30+ goal season.
He played in the NHL All-Star Game in his home base of Columbus, recording two goals and two assists, earning All-Star MVP honors (2015).
He was the first player in the history of the Predators franchise to wear a sweater number in the 90's, as he chose #92 in honor of his birth year.
