Why F.C.C. might be annoying
It's the dirtiest 'F' word in the English language.
They censor our right to free speech.
They have the power to revoke broadcasting licenses.
They get bent out-of-shape over 'bad words.'
They allow themselves to get bullied by ultra-conservative religious freaks.
They deemed George Carlin's seven dirty words routine (on Pacifica Radio) obscene, and won the landmark supreme court case 'US Government vs. Pacifica Radio.'
They have stricter censorship rights on national television and radio during hours that children are likely to be listening.
They allowed Bono to say the word 'fuck' on stage during the Golden Globes without any punishment to him or the TV channel he said it on.
They fined the Howard Stern Show over 1.2 million dollars since 1988.
During October of 2003, they were discussing plans to require DVD players to have a device installed in them that would prevent digital television shows from being shared online.
During an interview with an FCC official, Michael Moore brought up Howard Stern which lead to the official saying 'interview over!'
Michael's intentions for interviewing him were to 'find out why they're targeting Howard.'
They target rap music.
After the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime incident where Janet Jackson's breast was revealed to the viewing audience, Chairman Michael Powell said: 'Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration. Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt.'
They fined Clear Channel radio stations in Florida $750,000 for comments made on Bubba the Love Sponge's radio show, which eventually lead to his show being dropped.
They enjoy making a martyr out of Howard Stern.
They proposed a $357,500 fine against Infinity Broadcasting for an obscene broadcast of the Opie & Anthony Show.
They have yet to gain control over spam email offenders.
Why F.C.C. might not be annoying
One of the rules for being named a commissioner is that all five members cannot be from the same political party (maximum of three).
Colin Powell's son, Michael, has been their Chairman since January 22, 2001.
They intend to help protect children from mature content.
They fined Fax.com $5.4 million for sending unsolicited advertisements to the fax machines of 489 people (January 2004).
They have the right to fine telemarketers up to $11,000 for each time they call somebody who registered on a 'do not call' list.
They impose hefty fines against telecommunications companies that offer long-distance options to customers without regulatory approval, such as Qwest ($6.5 million) and Verizon ($5.7 million).
They protect customers from anti-competitive practices in the telecommunciations industry.
