Why he might be annoying:

    He turned down an athletic scholarship to college.
    He was nicknamed 'Country.'
    He allegedly tried to organize a strike by the Cardinals to protest Jackie Robinson's admittance to Major League baseball.
    In a game three months later, he spiked Robinson in the leg.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was known for his hustle, and ran to first on walks decades before Pete Rose.
    His 'Mad Dash' from first to home during Game Seven of the 1946 World Series was #10 on the Sporting News' list of Baseball's 25 Greatest Moments.
    He said of modern players, 'They're all too busy worrying about their money to have a good time.'
