TV Series
    (May 30, 2005- )
    Airs on Fox
    Hosted by Gordon Ramsay
Premise: Chefs compete in cooking challenges
Winner receives a cash prize and the opportunity to work as head chef at a restaurant of Ramsay’s choosing
The producers have been accused of manipulative editing to enhance the drama.
In a major editing blunder, during Season 6, contestant Amanda ‘Tek’ Moore appeared in several episodes after her elimination.
The show is big on bait and switch moments and commercial break cliffhangers.
Ramsay engages in blatant fat-shaming against any overweight chefs.
When a contestant is eliminated, Ramsay almost always comments on how utterly worthless they are, even if they had been doing terrific prior to the screw up that got them sent home.
Although certain dishes appear season after season (risotto, for example) – and thus would seem to be obvious recipes for contestants to practice ahead of time until they mastered them – chefs still screw them up season after season.
It is widely considered an improvement over the original British ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ which – except for season two – was a celebrity cook off.
Typical reality show tactics like backstabbing and nominating the strongest competitors for elimination are likely to get contestants reamed out for their behavior by Ramsay.
Ramsay occasionally shows his softer side, such as telling one cook with talent but little experience (Julia Williams in season 3) that he was paying her tuition to culinary school.
Some of Ramsay’s bait and switch comments are pretty funny: ‘This food is fit for the gods… because it’s all burnt offerings!’
