    Republican Senator from Pennsylvania (1980-2010)
    He ranked first in Washingtonian Magazine's 2004 list of meanest senators.
    His nickname is Snarlin' Arlen.
    He accused Anita Hill of perjury during Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings.
    He was part of the Warren Commission that investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy and was responsible for the controversial 'single bullet' theory.
    He was challenged by extreme right-wing candidate Pat Toomey in the 2004 Republican primary and secured the nomination with only 52% of the vote.
    As incoming head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he said that he would not approve any judges who wanted to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Under pressure from conservatives, he later back-peddled.
    He was considered a potential presidential candidate in 1996.
    His parents were immigrants.
    He is Pennsylvania's first five-term senator.
