Outlaw

The Resume

    (1963- )
Won the California Quick Pick lottery (1998)
Received $13.7 million after taxes, paid in 20 annual installments of $684,000
Robbed 11 banks, with a total haul of $40,000 over five months (April-September, 2017)
Sentenced to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release (March, 2018)

Why he might be annoying:

After winning the lottery, he declared, 'I know I'll change, but only for the better.... I'm not going to blow the money.'
He proceeded to blow the money on expensive cars (including six Lamborghinis), vacation homes, Rolex watches, Persian rugs, and trips to Vegas.
He also began dating younger women, resulting in a divorce and his ex-wife getting half his future lottery installments.
He spent so much, he was soon borrowing against his future lottery installments.
He filed for bankruptcy, with his remaining lottery installments being divided between his ex, his creditors and the IRS (2007).
    He became addicted to heroin.
His justification for bank robbery: 'I would never steal from a working guy. I would never take an old lady's purse. But I truly thought robbing a bank was a victimless crime. It's not the teller's money, it's the bank's -- and I hate banks.'

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was thirteen, his mentally ill mother became physically abusive, and child protective services sent him to live with his grandmother.
His generosity to friends and relatives also contributed to his financial difficulties.
He claimed that his addiction resulted from being prescribed Vicodin and OxyContin after suffering three herniated discs in his back (2004).
He became homeless after a fire destroyed the apartment complex where the owner had allowed him to live rent-free in return for working as a security manager (2007).
He did not carry a weapon with him during his robberies.
He would sometimes apologize to the bank teller before making his getaway.
