Why he might be annoying:

He developed the hydrogen bomb for the Soviet Union without thinking of its moral implications.
He did not take an interest in politics until it was too late.
He tried unsuccessfully to stop a nuclear test (1961).
Like Gandhi, he staged several hunger strikes.
He could not attend the Nobel ceremony when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
He died before he could see the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Why he might not be annoying:

He proposed the tokamak, a controlled fusion reactor, that is still the basis of most of the work being done in developing fusion power.
He was banned from all military-related research after he completed his essay 'Reflections on Progress, Peaceful Coexistence and Intellectual Freedom' and published it in the west (1968).
He sacrificed his quality of life in order to take a stand against the Soviet system.
He was kept under Soviet police surveillance (1980-1986).
He was against nuclear proliferation.
He played an important role in ending atmospheric nuclear tests.
He protested the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979).
He advocated humanity in the sciences.
One of the shuttlecraft in Star Trek: The Next Generation is named after him.
He died of a heart attack and was given a state funeral (1989).
