    The Skynyrd song ‘That Smell' was written about when Gary bought a brand new car, got drunk, and crashed it into a tree (hence the line ‘Whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way).
    He had drug and alcohol problems.
    Despite being from Florida, he, along with Ronnie Van Zandt wrote a song called ‘Sweet Home Alabama.'
    He wore a hat most of the time.
    His band often played in front of a Confederate flag.
    He still plays with a reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd, that features Ronnie Van Zandt's younger brother, Johnny Van Zandt.
    He is a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    He survived the plane crash that killed some of his Lynyrd Skynyrd band mates, including his childhood friend, Ronnie Van Zandt.
