The Resume

    (June 19, 1948-November 25, 1974)
Recorded albums: 'Five Leaves Left,' 'Bryter Layter' and 'Pink Moon'

Why he might be annoying:

He was pathologically shy and resented touring, which prevented his work from receiving much attention.
Because of this, he questioned himself as an artist, and became clinically depressed.
Allegedly, he was so depressed during the recording of his last album, 'Pink Moon,' that he could barely speak.
He is thought to have committed suicide.
Some fans made a big deal about his song being used in a 2000 Volkswagen commercial.

Why he might not be annoying:

The Volkswagen advertisement caused a significant bounce in his posthumous popularity, landing his songs in 'Serendipity,' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums.'
He is known for his gentle, autumnal songs, his unusual guitar tunings and his virtuoso right hand finger-picking technique.
He taught himself how to play guitar within a few months.
His vision for his music, right down to sound and presentation was something he would not allow to be compromised.
He had an early love for classical music and learned to play the piano and flute.
A distinguished athlete at school, he won several track and field performances and became captain of his rugby team.
According to friends and family, he mistook his antidepressants (Tryptizol) for sleeping pills and took a few to help him sleep. What he and his parents were never told was that taking one of these pills over the legal dose was lethal.
He was very close to Francoise Hardy.
Several contemporary musicians, such as Lucinda Williams, Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy, Matthew Good, Sebadoh's Lou Barlow, REM guitarist Peter Buck and Blur’s Graham Coxon, consider him an important influence.
He was a big fan of The Beatles and Bob Dylan.
His three albums ultimately became recognized (only after his death) as peak achievements in both the British folk-rock scene and the entire rock singer-songwriter genre.
