    She was an outspoken opponent of both the Vietnam War and the war in Iraq.
    Conservative groups attack her for opposing the death penalty and supporting gay marriage.
    She was arrested for protesting South Africa’s apartheid government (1985).
    Her push to establish a national holiday in her husband’s honor created heated controversy.
    She dealt with constant rumors of her husband’s infidelity.
    She continued to fight for civil rights decades after her husband was assassinated.
    She narrowly escaped injury after her house was firebombed by white supremacists (1956).
    She helped establish the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
    She campaigned for AIDS funding, research and awareness.
    She said: ‘Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood [sic].’
    An annual literature award was named in her honor by the American Library Association.
