    President of the Transvaal (South African Republic) (1883-1900)
    He received only three months of formal education.

    Joseph Goebbels used his life story for an anti-British propaganda film.
    His first wife and infant son died from malaria.
    He was nicknamed 'Whistler of the Tshwane River' by the natives for his ability to imitate bird calls.
    He was successful as both a military leader and a diplomat during the First Boer War (1880-81) that established independence for the Transvaal.
