Baseball Player

The Resume

    (April 21, 1887-January 13, 1978)
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Managed the Chicago Cubs (1926-30), New York Yankees (1931-46) and Boston Red Sox (1948-50)
    Win-Loss Record: 2125-1333
Three-time manager of the year (1936,1938,1943)
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1957)

Why he might be annoying:

He shared his name with the notorious red-baiting senator.
He never played in the majors.
Detractors said his success had more to do with the talent on his teams than his managerial abilities, with White Sox Jimmy Dykes calling him a 'push-button manager.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first manager to divide his pitching staff into starters and relievers.
Joe DiMaggio said, 'Never a day went by when you didn't learn something from McCarthy.'
He holds the record for best winning percentage in both the regular season (.615) and post-season (.638).
When the Baseball Writers Association of America chose the all-century team (1997), he finished second only to Casey Stengel among managers.
