    Born in Little Barford, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom
    Wrote the plays ‘The Ambitious Stepmother’ (1700), ‘Tamerlane’ (1702), ‘The Fair Penitent’ (1703), ‘The Royal Convert’ (1707) and ‘The Tragedy of Jane Shore’ (1714)
    Poet Laureate (1715-18)

Why he might be annoying:

    His father forced him to study law.
    ‘Tamerlane’ was written as an allegory to flatter King William III.
    His one attempt at comedy, ‘The Biter’ (1704), amused no one but himself.

Why he might not be annoying:

    ‘The Fair Penitent’ introduced the word ‘lothario’ into the English language.
    He was the first modern editor of Shakespeare’s plays.
    His translations of the Roman poet Lucan were praised by Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest achievements in English poetry.
