Born in Queens, New York
Birth name was Kvitka Cisyk
Coloratura soprano
Recorded ‘You Light Up My Life’ for the film of the same name (1977)
Recorded numerous commercial jingles, including ‘Have you driven a Ford lately?’ and ‘You deserve a break today’ for McDonald’s
Recorded the albums ‘Kvitka, Songs of the Ukraine’ (1980) and ‘Kvitka, Two Colors’ (1989)
Why she might be annoying
She decided to adopt ‘Kasey’ (based on her initials) for her commercial work and save Kvitka for an opera career that never took off (although she eventually found a use for the name when she recorded Ukrainian folk music).
Her recording of ‘You Light Up My Life’ was completely overshadowed by Debby Boone’s cover.
When her version of the song was released as a single, it was not credited to her but to ‘The Original Cast,’ possibly to cover up that star Didi Conn had been lip synching to Cisyk’s recording.
Why she might not be annoying
She won a scholarship to SUNY Binghamton as a violinist before winning a scholarship to the Mannes School of Music as a vocalist.
She began singing commercial jingles to support her family after her father died.
She sang ‘Have you driven a Ford lately’ for seventeen years, believed to be the record for longest running jingle with the same singer.
She sang so many jingles for so many companies that the New York Times suggested that she had the most heard voice in America.
A street in Lviv, Ukraine, was named after her.
