It's been promoted as a family show despite the racy dance numbers and storylines.
Critical response was initially lukewarm.

It was the sleeper hit of the 2009 television season.
It has the unglamorous setting of Lima, Ohio.
Performers such as Madonna, Rihanna and Billy Joel gave the show permission to use their songs.
Snarky dialogue keeps the feel-good storylines from getting too saccharine.
