    Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin
    Science fiction writer, helped develop the 'space opera' genre
    Professional chemist who spent most of his professional career in the food industry
    Best known for his Lensman, Skylark and Lord Tedric series

Why he might be annoying:

    He did his undergraduate thesis on the different types of clay found in Idaho.
    The initials stand for Edward Elmer.
    The name of his PhD dissertation was 'The effect of bleaching with oxides of nitrogen upon the baking quality and commercial value of wheat flour.' Whew!
    In his first book, he was too embarrassed to write the romantic parts so he had the wife of a friend write them for him.
    He was afraid to fly.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served as a cavalry officer in WWI.
    During WWII, he was fired from his job as a chemist with the Department of Defense because he refused to approve substandard munitions.
    He tried to make his work scientifically possible if not entirely plausible.
    He is believed to have developed the process by which powdered sugar sticks to donuts.
    He has had an enormous influence on the history of science fiction, directly inspiring the Star Wars movies and the television program Babylon 5 and greatly influencing writers such as Andre Norton and Fredrick Pohl.
    The United States military was inspired by some of his ideas to develop the SDI, stealth technology and Combat Information Centers on navy ships.
    He was an omnivorous reader, and was particularly a fan of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Edgar Allan Poe and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
    He would insert friends and relatives into his books by giving his characters similar names or appearances.
    He enjoyed parodies of his work.
