Why he might be annoying:

Although not Catholic, he attended Catholic school to avoid being drafted during World War II.
Some of his films are incredibly pretentious and hard to follow.
He directed a sequel to 'The Exorcist' despite his dislike of the original film. That film is one of the most despised sequels of all time.
He often uses gratuitous nudity of both genders.

Why he might not be annoying:

He always makes the films he wants to make, never allowing his vision to be compromised.
Even his lesser regarded films are praised for their visual quality.
He was good friends with Lee Marvin.
He is the president of the film training organization, The Young Irish Film Makers.
Despite his own failed attempt to make a film adaptation of 'The Lord of the Rings,' he greatly praised Peter Jackson's version.
