    (May 12, 1820-August 13, 1910)
Wrote 'Suggestions for Thought to Searchers after Religious Truths (1859),' 'Notes on Hospital (1859)' and 'Notes on Nursing (1859)'
Wrote the unpublished Book 'Cassandra (1852)'
    British Nurse during Crimean War
She thought she was 'called by God to some unnamed great cause' at 17 years old.
Her mother, Fanny Nightingale, was a domineering woman and was more concerned with finding Florence a good husband, than her education.
She upset her mother by rejecting a marriage offer from Lord Houghton, prior to rejections of several more suitors.
Her parents were completely opposed to her announcing she wanted to be a nurse since nursing was associated with working class women, a big no-no in that era.
Military officers and doctors objected to her views on reforming military hospitals, after she found the conditions appalling.
When she got older, she became a hypochondriac, suffering migraines, lost her sight (1895) and became an invalid.
She founded nursing as a modern profession.
She was close to her father, William Nightingale, a wealthy landowner of Embly Park, Hampshire.
She was born in Florence, Italy.
Her father, a Unitarian and Whig who had no son and was involved in the anti-slavery movement, treated her as a friend/companion.
Her father took responsibility for her education, including teaching her German, Greek, French, Italian, Latin, philosophy, history and mathematics.
She caught the attention and aid of John Delane, when she reported to The Times, the poor way the British Army treated its wounded soldiers.
She dramatically reduced the death rate by improving sanitation, then returned to England as a heroine (1856).
