The Resume

    (October 15, 1900-September 13, 1987)
    Born in San Francisco, California
Production Head at Warner Bros (1929-38; 55-59) and MGM (1938-45)
Directed ‘Little Caesar (1931),’ ‘I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932),’ ‘Johnny Eager (1941),’ ‘Random Harvest (1942),’ ‘Madame Curie (1943),’ and ‘Mister Roberts (1955)’
Produced ‘The Wizard of Oz (1939),’ ‘Little Women (1949),’ ‘The Bad Seed (1956),’ ‘No Time for Sergeants (1958),’ ‘The FBI Story (1959),’ and ‘Gypsy (1962)’

Why he might be annoying:

    He was married three times.
He completely omitted his six-year marriage to Edna Murphy from his autobiography.
    He briefly dated Ginger Rogers.
He had to be talked out of casting Gale Sondergaard as the Wicked Witch of the West by Arthur Freed (he originally envisioned a ‘slinky and seductive’ witch along the lines of the Queen in Disney’s Snow White).
He directed nine Best Picture nominees, but was only nominated for Best Director once (in 1941, for ‘Random Harvest’).
His last film credit was assisting in John Wayne’s pro-Vietnam War debacle, ‘The Green Berets.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the few movie producers in the Golden Age of Hollywood who could also direct.
He received a special Honorary Oscar for his work on the short subject film ‘The House I Live in’ with Frank Sinatra.
He reportedly introduced Ronald Reagan to his wife Nancy.
He might be more responsible than any other person for making the Wizard of Oz the classic film it is today.
This included his choosing to replace director Richard Thorpe with Victor Felming for not giving the film the fantasy-like element required, as well as advocating for the casting of Judy Garland over Shirley Temple for Dorothy.
He is credited with making Lana Turner a star (he convinced her to change her name from ‘Judy’ to Lana).
