Why he might be annoying:

While filming the climax in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gunnar's character was scripted to cut Marilyn Burns' character with a blood dispensing knife. Due to conditions brought on by the Texas heat, he was very fatigued and accidentally cut her for real, which is the take used in the film.
He didn't have a very successful career after the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
He sold pictures of himself on his website and sold his car on eBay.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the most memorable character in one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
He directed a documentary on Greenland.
When he was asked to reprise the role of Leatherface in the 2003 remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre he declined saying that he was insulted that the movie was even being considering for a remake.
