Why he might be annoying:

He was a cheapskate.
He was vain and conceited.
He was obsessed with the occult.
He thought he had psychic powers.
He claimed to be descended from a woman burned at the stake for witchcraft, but there's no proof.
He was friends with the wacky Satanist Aleister Crowley.
Many of his ideas about 'real' witchcraft come either from Crowley's lies or from the quack anthropology of Margaret Murray.
He was described by a fellow Wiccan as being 'more interested in outlets for his nudist and voyeuristic activities than in learning anything about authentic witchcraft.'

He had asthma.
He enjoyed reading.
He was a renowned expert on Malay history and culture.
He supported free love and practiced Tantric sex.
His wife thought his witchcraft stuff was crazy, but she stayed with him anyway.
Wiccans revere him as the father of their religion.
He was a vocal supporter of the British war effort during World War II.
He and Crowley got together to cast spells against Hitler (who knows, maybe it worked).
