Best known for her roles in plays such as Emile Zola's 'Therese Raquin,' Alexandre Dumas' 'La Dame aux Camelias' and Henrik Ibsen's 'Hedda Gabler'
Appeared in silent film ‘Cenere’ (1916)

Why she might be annoying:

She had a lifelong rivalry with Sarah Bernhardt.
She performed and traveled nonstop from age four.
She dumped a lover who gave a part he promised her to Bernhardt.
Overwork probably contributed to her death.
She said, ‘To save the theatre, the theatre must be destroyed, the actors and actresses must all die of the plague.’

Her mother gave birth to her in a wagon.
One of her lovers left her while she was pregnant.
Unlike most 19th century actresses, her acting was understated and naturalistic.
George Bernard Shaw famously preferred her to Sarah Bernhardt.

She was the first woman to appear on the cover of Time magazine.
